Ideas where do they come from?

I'm not sure!

Some scientist might be able to tell me. Something along the lines of some neural network joining another I suppose? It's funny how the brain works.

I had a little idea today. I didn't do what I should have done and written it down immediately (the golden rule). Instead I let it fester there, then this evening I got to work tinkering with a couple of stories I have on the go - and had tinkered well. I hit a natural pause. Should I write something on my new blog? Should I read a bit more of that Greek historical fiction I am reading? Hang on, I thought, I need to note down that idea I had earlier, I was going to write a couple of sentences about the idea so I could tap it in the future. But I kept going and 90 minutes later I have as polished a first draft as I've ever managed (believe me this is rare - stories are normally realised through perspiration and not inspiration).

Ideas where do they come from?

Today I don't care, I'm just glad they come from somewhere!

Hi Alex,

It's great when that happens -and I'll comment on the manuscript later. I've read it. I like....!

I can work on something for months and it can still feel like a really flakey first draft at the end, or sometimes write something in a day that feels much more polished.

It's good to have an idea where your ideas come from -so you can tap that source for more. Usually mine are pinched off my children... Fortunately, I've got three (children, not ideas) and their brains are coming up with wild and crazy things all the time and they won't miss the odd idea... (They're always playing 'shop' together in their bedroom. And the shop's name? 'Mitchitmopshopha' -of course. Why not? Don't steal the name. It's MINE!)

But just enjoy those ideas wherever they're from. Our job is to turn that idea into something really special. Which you just may have done with last night's idea....

Thanks Clare,

It is great isn't it . . . when the idea just pops into your head, and the words come by themselves. And yes sometimes it is a real struggle! Either way it doesn't matter how you get to the end as long as you do!

You're right about the kids - you can borrow so many ideas from the things they do and say! I think you are going to have to pronounce 'Mitchitmopshopha' to me!

But the best ideas - those little nuggets to polish - what fun they are!

Alex
